A Familiar Land
05 Sep 2025 - 30 Sep 2025
“You must return to a place to truly know it, and the more you return, the deeper this knowing becomes.”
~ David Ellingsen
We are delighted to welcome internationally acclaimed Canadian photographer David Ellingsen and his latest cycle of work, A Familiar Land, to the gallery. His limited-edition series is a meditation on landscapes of intimacy where he revisits familiar places in Pacific Rim National Park. These collage works are produced through longer exposures, typically distilling anywhere from 20 to 120 seconds into a single frame within the camera. Then, in re-sequenced combinations, with revealing overlaps, vistas emerge of lands recognizable yet made anew. Ellingsen’s perspectives are a reflection on possibilities that are nurtured and deepened through return journeys to a familiar land.
“In a practice sustained over many years, I have returned time again to these shores, drawing sustenance and resilience, as every living thing does, from the primal, harmonious interconnections with the natural world.”
A thoughtful selection of contemporary landscape paintings by Vancouver Island artists Ben Fox, Felice Mazzoni and Katsumi Kimoto speak to the theme of familiar Pacific Rim landscapes, ones that permeate memory and time.
