Davita Miles is a Victoria, British Columbia-based artist. Her work began during a time of healing when working with clay became a way to reconnect with her body. It has since evolved into an exploration of femininity resilience in the stories women’s bodies carry. Each sculpture is formed by hand using wild clay gathered from the lakebed and shoreline of Vancouver Island where Davita's family has a small property. Her newest collection, Nacre, is inspired by mother-of-pearl and the luminous interior of a shell. The pieces are finished with terra sigillata and are charcoal pit-fired, creating surfaces that are earthy, luminous and entirely individual. Through patience, curiosity and a deep connection to the earth, each piece emerges at its own pace, carrying a small piece of the landscape it came from.
