Janice Beaudoin's bold, playful, design-forward abstractions are inspired by the shapes and colours of both the natural and built world. A recent transplant to Victoria, Janice’s expressive work is rooted in a background in design, lending her paintings a strong graphic cadence and fusing her love of drawing, painting and collage. A process-driven artist, she is motivated by the “not knowing” inherent in making. Each canvas begins with improvised layers of colour and mark-making, evolving through a cycle of adding and subtracting as she responds to shifting relationships of form, colour and line. While abstract is at its core, her work occasionally reveals loose figurative elements—emerging in quirky, unexpected ways. This sense of discovery and ambiguity continues to fuel the evolution of her visual language. Influenced by contemporary artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Amy Sillman, and Chuta Kimura, Janice synthesizes these inspirations into work that feels both fresh and distinctly her own.
