Janis Gosbee paints emotive spaces — intuitive, layered compositions that capture the shifting qualities of emotion, atmosphere and energy. Dividing her time between Vancouver and Deep Bay, Vancouver Island, she draws inspiration from both the natural world and the inner dimensions of feeling and perception. Her process is deeply intuitive, building up spontaneous layers of colour, form, and mark-making. As each layer surfaces and recedes, a visual history emerges — traces of earlier marks peek through, like an archaeology of emotion and movement. Gosbee’s work invites viewers into spaces that are less about place or memory, and more about presence: the lived, felt experience of being. With over thirty years of artistic and design experience, Gosbee holds a Bachelor of Interior Design from the University of Manitoba. Her practice is shaped by a lifelong passion for visual art and art history, bringing authenticity, depth, and emotional resonance to her evolving body of work. An exhibiting member of The Federation of Canadian Artists, she was recently awarded first place at the Arrowsmith Chapters Spring Exhibition. Her paintings can be viewed at the Tofino Gallery of Contemporary Art, and at her studios in Vancouver and Deep Bay.
