My abstract landscape paintings, primarily large acrylics on canvas, have been described as metaphors of human interaction with the natural environment. Landscape and the effects of nature on me are powerful influences on my painting. Being a nomadic person and having experienced the landscapes of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, Eastern Africa, Italy and Belize. I attempt to explore nature's beauty, depth and spirituality through abstraction, using colour, form and texture as a metaphor for the meeting and interaction of humankind and nature. The works are autobiographies of my life, deepest emotions, and spiritual connection with nature. They are thresholds between two worlds, the spiritual and the physical. I work predominately with acrylic on canvas, usually large canvases that are 4 x 5 feet or larger. Often more than one painting works with another to create an environment installation. I work daily on smaller watercolours and drawings to collect information that is later internalized and used to create series of larger abstract, acrylics on canvas. I like to try other media for inspiration. As my work also challenges the 2- and 3-dimensional physicality of painting, I branch off into sculpture: wood, clay, metal and found objects. Nature presents me with infinite possibilities and the work is to discover it myself. I need it to seek refuge, to look at and to be a part of. Landscapes provide me with a link to nature and in turn, my spirit.
