Divine Feminine
25 Jun 2025 - 16 Jul 2025
With pleasure, our annual curated group show in figurative painting and sculpture, The Divine Feminine, debuts June 25, 2025.
A thoughtful selection of paintings and sculptures have been selected to highlight the theme of Divine Feminine, a spiritual and cultural concept that refers to the feminine aspect of the divine or sacred energy that exists in the universe and within every individual, regardless of gender. It represents a set of qualities, archetypes and energies often associated with nurturing, intuition, creativity, compassion, sensuality and interconnectedness. Its spiritual and cultural roots are found in Hinduism, Ancient Egypt, Greek Mythology, Christian Mysticism and Modern Spirituality.
New to the gallery are Rachel Ovadia, an international artist based in Toronto and Kaelin Palcu, who resides between Salt Spring Island, BC and Brooklyn, NY. A thoughtful selection from Ovadia’s Ballet Dancers series is being showcased alongside works from Palcu’s “Anatomy of a Poor Decision” series.
Each of the featured artworks speaks in some way to the theme. In sculpture, Jim Schwartz’s bronze sculpture, Cult Object 4, is a metaphor for the fertility of the universe. Birgit Piskor’s modified concrete sculpture, Standing Torso, is an abstract female form, sensual and softly curvaceous. Myles Lowry’s sculpture, Night Swim, is a life-size cast of a female torso made from cotton fibre and raw pigment. And rounding out this diverse selection of sculpture is Anne-Sophie Falconer who works in winterstone. Her Mon Histoire (4/10) is a face that resembles a cup, a face that reads like a map, a vessel that contains an individual’s unique life stories.
In painting, Elly Smallwood, internationally renowned for her large, lush, visceral canvases has created a series of mini paintings, which allow for an intimate connection on a small scale. Lucy Schappy, widely collected for her exuberant, playful women series, has a number of delightful artworks in the exhibit. And distinguished painter and instructor, Michelle Miller, recently returned from teaching in Italy, has contributed two abstract figurative paintings with a wonderful 20th c. cubistic vibe.
